Laser hair reduction in Pune: what to know before your first session

Laser hair reduction is one of the most searched-for treatments in Pune, and one of the most misunderstood. The technology has moved a long way from the early lasers that were unsuitable for darker skin, but the outcome still depends on the device, the settings and the person operating it.
Here is what to understand before you book anywhere.
How it works
The laser delivers light at a wavelength absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy heats the follicle and reduces its ability to regrow hair, while the surrounding skin is protected, on modern platforms, by integrated cooling.
Because hair grows in cycles and the laser only affects follicles in the active phase, treatment is planned as a series of sessions spaced weeks apart. Hair that returns between sessions tends to be finer and lighter.
Indian skin and the right laser
Skin with more melanin needs a laser and settings that target the hair without over-heating the skin, otherwise there is a risk of pigmentation or burns. Diode platforms with contact cooling, used at settings chosen for your skin type, are widely used for this reason.
At Own Skin, laser hair reduction is performed on the Alma Soprano ICE Platinum. Whichever clinic you choose, ask which device is used and how settings are adjusted for skin tone.
Before your first session
Avoid waxing, threading or plucking the area for a few weeks before treatment, the laser needs the hair root in place. Shaving is fine and is usually asked for a day before the session.
Keep the area out of strong sun and skip tanning; recently sun-exposed skin is more reactive. If you are on any medication or have a history of keloids, cold sores or pigmentation, mention it at consultation.
What a session feels like
Most people describe a warm or mild snapping sensation. Cooling built into the handpiece keeps the surface comfortable. Mild redness for a few hours afterwards is common; the area can usually be washed and moisturised the same day.
Sunscreen on exposed areas and avoiding heat (hot showers, steam, workouts) for a day or so is standard aftercare.
Questions to ask any clinic in Pune
Who will assess my skin and hair before treatment? Which device is used, and is it suitable for my skin tone? What is the plan if I develop pigmentation or irritation? How are sessions spaced, and what happens to hair that regrows?
Clear answers to these tell you more than any offer.
Frequently asked questions
- Is laser hair reduction permanent?
- It produces long-term reduction rather than complete permanent removal. Hair that regrows is typically finer and sparser, and occasional maintenance sessions may be advised.
- Is it safe for darker Indian skin?
- Yes, when performed with an appropriate laser and settings chosen for your skin type by a dermatologist-led team.
- Can I do laser hair reduction in Pune's summer?
- Yes, provided you protect treated areas from sun exposure and use sunscreen as advised.
