How to choose a dermatologist in Pune

Pune has no shortage of clinics offering skin and hair treatment, from hospital departments to salon-style aesthetic studios. That choice is useful, but it also makes it harder to tell who is actually qualified to diagnose and treat your skin.
This guide sets out what to look for, in the order that matters, so that your first appointment, wherever you take it, starts from the right place.
Start with the qualification, not the treatment menu
A dermatologist in India is a doctor who has completed MBBS followed by a postgraduate degree in dermatology, typically MD (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy) or the DNB equivalent. That training covers the medical side of skin, hair and nails as well as procedures.
Ask directly, or look for the degree on the clinic's website and signage. Every practising doctor in Maharashtra is also registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council, and you are entitled to ask for that registration number.
A long list of machines does not tell you who is operating them. A dermatologist's qualification does.
Ask who assesses you and who performs the procedure
At a well-run clinic, the dermatologist examines you, makes the diagnosis and decides whether a procedure is appropriate at all. Some procedures are then performed by the doctor; others may be carried out by trained staff under the doctor's direct supervision.
What you want to avoid is a plan sold before a doctor has looked at your skin. If you are being offered a package at the front desk, ask when the consultation happens.
Look at hygiene and consent, not just décor
Sterile, single-use consumables for anything that breaks the skin, visible hand hygiene, and clean treatment rooms are non-negotiable. So is written consent that explains the procedure, the likely downtime and the risks before you agree to it.
Clinical photography should be taken only with your permission and stored securely. Before-and-after images shown to you should be the clinic's own, with the patient's consent.
Be cautious with promises
Skin treatments work progressively and differ between individuals. Phrases such as guaranteed results, permanent cure or instant clearing are marketing, not medicine. A dermatologist will talk about likely improvement, the number of sessions that may be needed, and what could limit the result.
It is also reasonable to ask what happens if a treatment does not suit you, a good clinic will have an answer.
Practical questions for Pune
Think about where you will realistically travel to for a course of sessions. Laser hair reduction, acne programmes and hair-loss treatment often need visits spaced weeks apart, so a clinic on your commute matters more than one that looks impressive online.
Own Skin is in Camp, on MG Road, which is reachable from most of central and east Pune. Whichever clinic you choose, check timings against your schedule before you commit to a plan.
