Understanding the concern
What are viral skin infections?
Viral infections occur when viruses infect the skin and cause visible lesions, bumps, rashes or growths. They are fairly common in children and adults; some are mild and self-limiting, while others may spread, persist or cause cosmetic concern.
They may appear as small bumps or growths, clustered lesions or blisters, smooth dome-shaped papules, or rough, thickened growths. Because several conditions look similar, accurate diagnosis by a dermatologist is important.
Possible causes
Causes of herpes & viral infections
Viral infections develop when viruses enter the skin through small breaks or direct contact:
Some infections spread gradually across nearby skin if left untreated.
- 01Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person
- 02Sharing personal items such as towels or razors
- 03Minor skin injuries or cuts
- 04Weakened immune response
- 05Exposure in public environments such as gyms or swimming pools
Types
Common types of viral infections

- 01
Warts
Small, rough growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) on the hands, feet, fingers, face or elsewhere. Generally harmless but may spread or become bothersome.
- 02
Molluscum contagiosum
Small, smooth, dome-shaped bumps with a central indentation on the face, arms, torso or genital area; contagious through direct contact.
- 03
Herpes simplex infections
Clusters of small fluid-filled blisters, commonly around the mouth or lips, often with tingling or burning and recurrent episodes.
- 04
Viral rashes
Diffuse rashes or widespread eruptions during systemic viral illnesses; consultation confirms whether a rash is viral or another condition.
